How to play

Use the arrow keys, WASD, the direction buttons, or swipe across the board. Matching tiles merge when they meet. Each merge adds the new tile’s value to your score.

Reach 2048 to win, then keep playing if you like. The game ends when the board is full and no tiles can merge. A new tile appears after every valid move.

Your progress and best score stay in this browser on this device. Clearing browser data removes them. No account needed.

How to play the 2048 puzzle

The goal is to create a tile with the number 2048 on a four-by-four board. Move the tiles up, down, left or right. When two tiles with the same number meet, they combine into one tile with double the value: two 2s become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on. Each merge adds the value of the new tile to your score.

On desktop, click or tap the board to focus it, then use the arrow keys or WASD. On a phone or tablet, swipe across the board. You can also use the direction buttons below it. Each valid move adds a new tile, so think about where the other tiles will end up before choosing a direction.

The game ends when the board is full and no matching neighbours can merge. Reaching 2048 lets you choose Keep playing to continue towards larger tiles. New game starts a fresh board.

Tips for your next game

Try keeping your largest tile in one corner and building nearby tiles towards it. Leave room to move smaller numbers into position, and look for a sequence of merges rather than only the next pair. These are starting strategies to experiment with, rather than a guarantee of winning.

Before moving, check the whole board. A move that combines one pair can also separate another pair or fill a space you wanted to keep open. If the board is getting crowded, look for moves that create more empty squares.

Saving your progress

Your progress and best score are saved in this browser on this device when browser storage is available. They do not sync between devices or browsers. Clearing the site data removes your saved progress. If storage is unavailable, your game lasts only for the current page session.

You do not need an account to play the 2048 puzzle. The optional public leaderboard shows nicknames and scores. Use a nickname you are comfortable sharing publicly. Local play remains available when an online round cannot start; local-only results cannot be submitted to the public leaderboard.
